Friderika

Since she was a child, Friderika had dreamt of becoming a singer. At the age of six she applied to a music primary school. At the age of fourteen, she decided to become a singer. Her mother, who once also dreamt of becoming a singer, took her daughter to her old voice teacher, who – after listening to her – offered to teach her free of charge. Her dream came true at the age of 22; out of the blue, she won first place at the Festival of Dance Music, organized by the Hungarian Broadcasting Company, Nobody had even heard of her. The title of her winning song was ”To Whom Shall I Tell My Sins?” The contest was very interesting; they started believing that the 1st place had already been decided. Furthermore, her song seemed to be out of place… Two months later she had to face the international competition. Dublin. The 1994 Eurovision Song Contest was the first time a Hungarian singer made it to the finals. A childhood dream had come true; she had the opportunity to sing on the stage of which she had only dreamed of a few years ago. The event was watched by 600 million viewers. One month later her success led her to the next level; her first album was released on April 30 1994, and went gold in less than two months.

Many other awards followed. In 1994 she won the EMERTON Award from the Hungarian Radio for her success at the Eurovision Song  Contest; the Golden Deer Award founded by the Axel Springer Publishing House in the category of pop singer of the year; the readers of Youth Magazine also selected her as pop singer of the year. In 1995 she received the EMERTON award as the discovery of the year; the Golden Giraffe Award from MAHASZ Records, and 2nd place at the 32nd Sopot Festival in Poland.

In the meantime, the recording of her second album was already underway. The album titled Friderika 2, was released on January 24th, a year and a half after her first hit. Her first nationwide tour started at the end of September 1996 and ended mid-November. A year and a half of silence followed. The reason for the silence was simple: her third album, a significant departure from her previous albums, was on the way. She introduced her new self through these songs; the public met an optimistic, cheerful, and happy Friderika. During this time she went through a significant transformation. It was as if the sun had suddenly risen, and she could see that life was indeed very good. She became a different person.

The new album was received even better than expected. Shortly after being released, the first single from the album became one of the most popular songs on the radio. Her song ‘You Phoned My Heart’ was her biggest radio hit at that point. The excellent reception from the media continued.

The following album’s title track, ’The Treasure That We Have’, was played by Radio Juventus and Danubius in heavy rotation. The CD contained 13 brand new songs in which the author and the collaborating artists sought to maintain the sound established in the previous record. In 2001 the fifth album, titled ’You’ll Find Your Way Home’ was finished. The album was beautifully orchestrated melodic pop.

In addition to her success as a musician Friderika is a happy wife and mother, she describes the secret to her success below:

It’s interesting that, when I was a child, and there were problems at school or at home with Mom and Dad, I would always escape to music. Even on the way to the store with a basket swinging in my hand, I was constantly humming a little tune. When someone recognized it, I would get very embarrassed. You’ve felt this way before, haven’t you? Later I thought this would be a great way for me to distinguish myself from others. I wanted people to be awestruck, to love me and to remember me even if I were no more. But I haven’t thought this way for a while now. I sing to put a smile on your face and to brighten your day. I would like to convince you with my songs that there is always a reason to rejoice. Life is good. By believing that Jesus loves me and guides my fate I do not have to be afraid of death or failure. Everything’s changed within me. I am delighted that I have the opportunity to sing of this wonderful living person, to whom nothing compares. There aren’t enough songs for me to thank Him and praise Him for all that He’s done for me.
